The 5 Moments Of A Disastrous Week In Philly Sports

By Andrew Porter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It has been a torturous week in Philadelphia sports, to say the least.

With the Flyers and Sixers not participating in the playoffs, the Eagles beginning mandatory mini-camp, and the Phillies trekking through a miserable season what could possibly go so wrong?

Thursday, June 11th - Eagles release Evan Mathis

After a reported contract dispute which has lasted almost two years, Chip Kelly and the Eagles flat-out released their 33-year-old Pro Bowl guard. Everyone loses here: Kelly, Mathis, the Eagles, and the fans.

Saturday, June 13th - Sixers announced setback suffered by Joel Embiid

"During his visit with Dr. Richard Ferkel, a standard CT scan on Joel's right foot revealed less healing than anticipated at this point," the Sixers announced in a statement on Saturday night.

So it's been a full year and Embiid, the Sixers' No. 3 overall pick in 2014 who has not played a game yet, is still not healed from his foot surgery. What is taking so long? Is he going to need surgery again? When is this guy gonna play? Ever? I'm officially worried.

Monday, June 15th - The Blackhawks win their third Stanley Cup in six years, Kimmo Timonen raises trophy first

Philadelphia is certainly happy for Timonen, but still---it's just another former Philly athlete winning a championship elsewhere. And those Blackhawks. They beat us in that 2007 first overall pick coin-toss, they get Patrick Kane, and form a dynasty. Lovely.

Tuesday, June 16th - Andre Iguodala wins NBA Title, named Finals MVP

Oh, Iggy. A polarizing figure during most of his nine seasons in Philadelphia, often criticized for not being able to be the number one guy. In reality, the Sixers never had enough talent to really contend for a title during Iggy's tenure with the Sixers. In Golden State, he did, and he performed.

Tuesday, June 16th - Phils lose 19-3

Phils starter Jerome Williams gets hurt in the first inning, the Orioles hit a franchise record eight home-runs, Jeff Francoeur pitches two inning throwing 48 pitches (much to Chase Utley's chagrin), the bullpen phone is off-the-hook and pitching coach Bob McClure starts waving the white towel (figuratively and literally).

The Phils lose 19-3.

Ps. They had six hits and committed two errors.
