Sixers CEO On Not Saying Wells Fargo: 'A Partnership's A Two-Way Street'

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - To the Sixers, it's just 'The Center" from now on.

The team made the decision they were going to stop referring to their home arena -- the Wells Fargo Center -- by name in all news releases and on the team website.

This came about because the financial institution chose not to become a business partner with the Sixers' franchise.

Sixers CEO Scott O'Neil joined the WIP Morning Show Friday.

Podcast

"It's the same arena we've been at for some time," he told Angelo Cataldi and the 94WIP Morning Show

O'Neil says Wells Fargo has been a partner of the Sixers for a long time, but decided to invest in golf and tennis instead of the team:

"It's not gonna work, there's no free lunch in this town, or at least that's what I've experienced. From my perspective, I think Sixers fans have been coming to the arena for some time, they know where it is, they know where to find great entertainment and good basketball, and I look forward to seeing them at the Center."

O'Neil said he doesn't think this is the first time a team has done something like this before.

He added, to his knowledge, the league doesn't have any issues with what they are doing and says it's best to not make a big deal of the whole thing.
