Coalition Launches Utility Imposter Awareness Campaign

By Tony Romeo

HARRISBURG, PA (CBS) -- Utility companies and regulators say members of the public should not be afraid to call 9-1-1 if they are suspicious when someone claiming to be a utility worker shows up at their door looking to get into their home.

A coalition called 'The Keystone Alliance to Stop Utility Imposters' says incidents involving criminals posing as utility workers is increasing in general, and tends to spike in warm weather months.

The group says it's rare for a utility worker to show up at your door without an appointment, and if that happens, always ask for photo ID before letting them in. And if you're still suspicious, Public Utility Commissioner Pam Witmer says don't hesitate to call 9-1-1, that's one reason why the coalition is working with law enforcement.

"They are working with the district attorneys association and the sheriff's association, so that we can inform law enforcement," Witmer said. "And to make sure that that community is aware and can be prepared when those calls come in."
