Ex-Democratic Boss Moves To Overturn Corruption Conviction

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A former northern New Jersey Democratic power broker convicted of federal racketeering, wire fraud and bribery charges is now seeking a new trial or to have the verdicts overturned.

Joseph Ferriero's lawyers filed their motion Friday in federal court. It wasn't clear Saturday if a hearing has been scheduled on the motion.

The motion cites several instances in which the lawyers claim the government provided no evidence or insufficient evidence to prove its allegations against Ferriero, who was the head of the Bergen County Democratic Organization for a decade.

They also claim the jury was improperly allowed to consider some allegations that prejudiced their deliberations on the remaining alleged racketeering acts and counts to "the point of a manifest injustice."
