Sac And Fox To Launch Campaign For Return Of Jim Thorpe's Remains

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The principal chief of the Sac and Fox Nation says the tribe is launching a campaign aimed at moving Jim Thorpe's remains from Pennsylvania to Oklahoma.

Chief George Thurman intends to launch the "Bring Jim Thorpe Home" campaign Wednesday afternoon in Oklahoma City. The announcement comes a day after Thorpe's sons asked the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene.

Thorpe was a famous Olympian a century ago and died in 1953. His third wife agreed to have him buried in a Pennsylvania town that in return renamed itself after the athlete.

Courts have differed on whether his remains should be returned to the Sac and Fox Nation under a 1990 repatriation law. The borough of Jim Thorpe says Thorpe's wife had the right to decide where to bury her husband.
