Report: Phillies Willing To Eat More Of Hamels' Salary
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Cole Hamels is the best player on the 19-33 last placed Phillies and it's not close. The Phillies, amid a rebuild, know this and are reportedly willing to eat more of Hamels' contract.
"Per the source, the Phillies now are willing to take on more of Hamels' remaining salary than they had been earlier in the season," according to the WEEI.com report. "Philly hasn't, however, backed off its demand for the kind of premier talent potential trade partners don't currently seem comfortable giving up."
Hamels, 31, is 5-4 with a 2.91 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched), and 76 strikeouts in 11 starts this season. He makes $22.5 million this season, $67.5 million over the next three, and has a 2019 club option for $20 million.
Hamels has been one of the best starting pitchers in baseball throughout his 10-year career, plus he has a World Series ring, and a World Series MVP. As the July 31st Major League Baseball trade deadline approaches, Hamels will be one of, if not the, hottest commodities in baseball.
