Pennsylvania Lawmakers Return To Harrisburg With A Mountain To Move In June

By Tony Romeo

HARRISBURG, PA (CBS) -- State lawmakers return to the capital Monday to begin their run-up to the budget deadline at the end of the month. But many observers are doubtful that the deadline will be met.

Governor Wolf's ambitious budget proposals include raising state income and sales taxes while reducing school property taxes, imposing a severance tax on natural gas extraction, and increasing school funding. But there are other big issues on the agenda, too, including reform of public employee pensions, liquor privatization, and medical marijuana.

At a Main Line Chamber of Commerce event on Friday, Delaware County Republican Bill Adolph Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee said with so many big issues in the mix, a completed budget by June 30th seems like a long shot.

"Things can happen fast, but I think we're a little bit far behind right now," Adolph said.

Adolph thinks a budget should be completed by June 30th, with debate on other big issues continuing after that, but he admits it's unlikely to happen.
