PATCO Riders Finally Getting To Try Out Newly Refurbished Rail Cars

By David Madden

CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) - It's been debated, approved and then delayed for a number of years. But later this week, PATCO riders will actually be able to use the first of the refurbished rail cars along the high speed line.

With a number of software and safety issues now adequately addressed by the New York state firm contracted to re-do the 120 car fleet from the shells in, it's time for those kind of new cars to start making money.

On the 28th of May, we're going to have a press event," says CEO of the Delaware River Port Authority John Hanson. "We're going to inaugurate the new cars and put them into revenue service."

Six are ready to roll now and four more are almost there. Hanson says that'll get things rolling so to speak:

"According to the schedule we will expect to receive four new cars a month and send Alstom four old cars a month."

Hanson is relieved to get to this point, but insists they wanted the $194-million project done right, and that took longer than anyone expected.
