Report Finds South Jersey Town Could Benefit From County Run Police Department

By David Madden

PENNSAUKEN, NJ (CBS) -- The success of the Camden County police force in the city of Camden is well documented.

Now the county's hoping to bring another town into the consolidated fold, offering up a study suggesting Pennsauken could save millions of dollars a year if they join in.

The report, compiled by the Cordero Group at the behest of the county, determined Pennsauken could save 4.8 million dollars a year with a county run department at the current staffing level of 79 officers. Add another million if the force were trimmed by 10.

Pennsauken Mayor Rick Taylor says, "We'd be foolish not to look at anything as a possibility of saving money. But money's not the most crucial side of it. The safety and well being of our residents take priority over that."

He says town officials are pouring over the report and plan to follow up with questions for Camden County.

Nothing will be approved without public and police input, a process Taylor says could take a year or more.
