New City Website Shows Taxpayers' Effects Of Proposed School Funding Program

By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Mayor Michael Nutter says a new city website will show taxpayers precisely how they would be affected under his plan to fund Philadelphia schools.

Mayor Nutter has proposed a 9-percent property tax increase to generate 105 million new dollars for public schools.

A new city website, schoolfunding.phila.gov, allows a homeowner to plug-in their address and find out not only how much their individual property taxes would go up, but how many more teachers, support staff and supplies that money would buy at nearby schools.

Nutter says the site also shows how many more teachers, support staff and supplies that money would buy at schools near you.

"What you're going to see are real dollars," the mayor says, "but also real investments that principals want to make at their individual schools."

The principals' wish lists assume the district gets all it requests from the city and the state. The mayor's property tax hike has received an icy reception from City Council.
