Ride Your Bike To Work Day Recognized In Philly Suburbs

By Jim Melwert

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) - The Greater Valley Forge Transportation Management Association celebrated their 4th annual "Bike To Work Day" Friday morning.

A group from Montgomery County rode up the Schuylkill River Trail from Norristown to Valley Forge National Historic Park, meeting with a contingent who rode in from Chester County.

Montco commissioner Josh Shapiro says this is to highlight the trail system, not only for recreation, but also for commuting to work:

"You'll actually be able to get on in Lower Merion, go over the Schuylkill River on a bridge the is being repurposed for biking or walking, then either go into Manayunk into Philadelphia that way or go all the way out to Reading. It's just an exciting place to live and work and play and the trails are a huge part of that."

Representatives from area bike shops say while it may seem intimidating at first, commuting to work by bike is not as hard as it sounds.

They add with all the road construction in the area, in many cases it may be faster too.
