New Jersey Could Soon Be Only State To Enforce Complete Self-Serve Gas Pumping Ban

By Tim Jimenez

CHERRY HILL, N.J. (CBS) - Legislation on the west coast could leave New Jersey in a class of its own when it comes to banning drivers from pumping their own gas.

The Oregon House passed a bill that would lift the self-serve ban in only the rural areas in the state. A partial change to their law, if passed, would leave New Jersey all by itself with the complete restriction in place.

Many New Jersey residents tell KYW Newsradio they'd be fine with this distinction:

"I don't mind them pumping my gas. It's easier and a lot faster plus it keeps them having jobs."

"I always thought that we should be like everybody else. My mother, who is older, loves the fact that she doesn't have to pump her own gas."

April from Pennsauken says it's not a perfect system, but she wouldn't have it any other way:

"I mean, the only downside is sometimes when it's busy you don't get attention or it takes a while longer than if you were to do it yourself, but usually the upside is better than the downside."

That upside is still cheaper to fill up in New Jersey and "I enjoy it, especially on rainy days," April says.

Residents say why rock a boat they're fine with that's been on course since 1949?
