Montco Prison Inmate Sentenced For Slashing Fellow Prisoner

By Jim Melwert

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) -- A Montgomery County, Pa. man pleaded guilty today to slashing the face and neck of a child-sex offender last December inside the Montgomery County Prison.

Michael Call, 29, of Norristown, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault for slashing Gary Romano with a sharp object inside Romano's cell at the county prison.  As part of the plea deal, a charge of attempted murder against Call was dropped.

Romano needed 47 stitches and nearly died from his wounds.  He was able to identify Call as his attacker by the red-lips tattoo on the side of Call's neck.

The prosecution argued that Call went after Romano because Romano was convicted of sex crimes against a child.  Prosecutors allege that Call had told another inmate he wanted to "get rid of all the child molesters on the cell block."

Assistant district attorney Lindsay O'Brien says Call is a dangerous man who took the law into his own hands.

"Jailhouse justice won't be tolerated," she said after today's guilty plea.  "We'll go after someone that attempts to get justice within the jailhouse, just like any other defendant."

Call also pleaded guilty to a previous aggravated assault charge and probation and parole violations.  He was immediately sentenced to 5½ to 11 years in state prison.
