Blue Duck Sandwich Company: BBBLT, $9

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- I had resolved not to include BLTs in the contest because the bottom-line point for me was to find new and creative uses for man's best food. But the Blue Duck, a cozy spot set inside a Northeast Philly strip mall, took such a new approach to the classic that I had to check it out.
The $9 mega-sandwich boasts a full dozen slices of bacon. Two kinds, actually. There's your classic crispy smoked bacon, but it's intermingled with a terrific local product – 1732 Meats "Garlic Insanity Bacon." Tell me that doesn't sound like something worth driving 12 miles out of the way for. Which I did, actually.
It's slapped onto a tasty toasted brioche bun, topped with lettuce and tomato and slathered with bacon mayonnaise. Now, I'm not a mayo fan. I usually scrape if off a sandwich with a knife. But this mix was so, well, "bacony,' that I left it on and discovered that it made a wonderful sandwich even better. So now I've been converted into a mayo may.
All in all, a great product. And next year, if the Food Hunt goes another direction, I'm headed back for the "Blue Jawn," which is a duck-and-beef patty with bleu cheese and red onion jam. How great does that sound?
