KYW Flashback: The Center City Harrison Court Building Blaze

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- The windows of the KYW conference room on Independence Mall glowed a blood-red. They were reflecting the blaze that suddenly swept down the busy corridor from tenth and Filbert to the Gallery and Chinatown.

Reporters at the conference table just grabbed their gear and bolted. The unoccupied 8-story Harrison Court Building had burst into flames and the wind carried the fire east, consuming or damaging 15 buildings in its path.

This was Center City where shoppers and commuters were fleeing and office workers were being evacuated.

When the blaze was doused, investigators determined workers on the Harrison building roof had accidentally triggered the fire. Congestion had made it difficult to contain.
