Police: Student Accused Of Poisoning Teacher At NJ High School

BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, NJ (CBS) -- Police say a student has been charged for allegedly putting eye drops in a teacher's beverage, sending the faculty member to the hospital.

Police say they responded to Central Regional High School in Ocean County for a report of a teacher who fell ill after ingesting an unknown substance.

Authorities say it was reported a student may have put Visine eye drops in the teacher's drink.

The sickened teacher was taken to the hospital.

Berkeley Township police initiated an investigation to determine what caused the teacher to become ill.

As a result, a juvenile was taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault on a school board member.

Police say the juvenile was processed and released to their parents pending JV Court proceedings.

Central Regional High School Superintendent Triantafillos Parlapanides says, "Luckily the teacher is okay and was evaluated at Toms River Community Medical Center and has returned to work today. The student is suspended and a Board Hearing is being scheduled."
