Pa. Teen Breaks World Record By Solving Rubik's Cube In 5.25 Seconds

HARLEYSVILLE, Pa. (CBS) -- A Pennsylvania teen has set the world record in completing a Rubik's Cube.

In just 5.25 seconds, Montgomery County teen Collin Burns solved the puzzle as others cheered him on.

He set the world record on Saturday during a competition at Central Bucks West High School.

Burns, 15, is now the fastest in the world. He beat the previous record by three-tenths of a second.

This is the first time an American has held the record since 2006.

"When it comes to solving a cube, you do it in steps. So you first build a cross, it's called. Then you sort of build up by layers; you do your first two layers, then you do a couple different algorithms," Burns explained.

He has been "cubing" and said solving the Rubik's Cube is simple, if you do your homework.

"There's lot of different methods and it's really not that difficult to learn," Burns said.

In addition to solving the Rubik's Cube with two hands, he can also do it with only one hand, which takes a little bit longer.

Burns' speed-cubing record will most likely be included in the next edition of the Guinness Book of World Records.
