KYW Flashback: Rigging The Pennsylvania Lottery

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It didn't take long to figure out how to rig the Pennsylvania Lottery and score a big 1.8 million dollar win.

But in 1980 when a small group of people threw a lot of money into just 8 number combinations, someone was bound to notice.

One of the people who thought it odd when triple sixes rolled out of the tube on live television 35 years ago was KYW's Harrisburg Bureau Chief Sandy Starobin.

He began asking questions and learned that detectives were already on the job.

When the smoke cleared, the lottery studio host, Nick Perry was wearing handcuffs for hatching a plot to weight ping pong balls with the numbers 4 and 6, then switch them with the real lottery balls. KYW broke the story. Perry served time.
