South Jersey High School Baseball Tournament Honors Philadelphia Sports Icon

By Mike DeNardo

VOORHEES, N.J. (CBS) -- A high school baseball tournament held Saturday has been renamed for the late "Dean" of Philadelphia sports broadcasters.

The tournament at Eastern High School in Voorhees is now known as the Bill Campbell Baseball Classic, in honor of the legendary broadcaster who died last October at the age of 91. Campbell spent the last two years of his life at tournament sponsor Brightview Senior Living in Marlton. Eastern's Baseball coach Rob Christ says it's a way to preserve the legacy of one of Philadelphia's iconic voices.

"Bill Campbell was such a big part of the generation that I'm a part of," he says. "I'm not sure that the younger players truly appreciate just how much of an icon he was in Philadelphia sports history."

Christ says it's appropriate that a high school tournament bears the name of a broadcaster who appreciated the game in its purest form.
