Dozens In Philadelphia Shred Past For Safer Future

By John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A free community shredding event was held Saturday outside the CBS Broadcast Center in the Spring Garden section of Philadelphia.

Every year CBS3 and SB1 Federal Credit Union team up to host the event. Car after car drove up with bundles, boxes and bags full of personal documents to be shredded.

Marie Westen of Yeadon, Delaware County said she was there to protect herself from identity theft.

"I have so many documents I need shredded, and I've been keeping them in the house for years," she said. "I won't put them in trash, so I bought shredders but they don't last."

One man hauled out 15 boxes from his vehicle containing 20 years of accumulated papers.
