Diabetic Diet Is For Everyone
By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Diets aimed at diabetics are good for everyone and can help non diabetics and other family members control weight and improve health.
Some basic ideas behind the diabetic diet is to choose carbs with lots of fiber. These include fresh fruits and vegetables and whole-grain breads and cereals. The focus is to go easy on desserts, white bread and sweetened drinks.
Fats that are healthier for your heart are emphasized. These include vegetable oils, olives, avocados, nuts, low-fat mayonnaise and margarine in a tub. Cut back on butter, regular mayonnaise, and stick margarine. The diet also limits fried foods, bacon and meats with visible fat on them.
Lean proteins such as fish, lean meats and poultry without the skin are recommended as well as low-fat cheese, eggs, beans, nuts and soy foods. All of these choices can be great for us.
