After Showboat Tangle, Stockton University President Herman Saatkamp Calling It Quits

By David Madden

GALLOWAY, N.J. (CBS) -- The president of Stockton University is stepping down this summer.

In a two-page letter to the school's board of trustees, Herman Saatkamp says he'll stay on until the end of August and aid in the search for his successor during a subsequent one-year leave from an ongoing teaching position.

He cites "past and present health considerations" as one reason for leaving.

Saatkamp departs with a major personal goal left unmet: setting up a campus in Atlantic City.  Stockton bought the shuttered Showboat Casino last year with hopes of doing just that, untll a legal hangup over its use as anything but a casino prompted a resale to developer Glenn Straub -- a deal which has yet to close.

Saatkamp concedes that the Showboat roadblock made the presidency "less worthwhile" to him.
