Philadelphia Woman Accused Of Abandoning Quadriplegic Son In Woods Faces Extradition

By Tim Jimenez

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- An extradition hearing is scheduled today in Maryland for the woman accused of abandoning her severely disabled son in the woods in the Cobbs Creek section of Philadelphia.

Forty-one-year-old Nyia Parler is in police custody in Montgomery County, Maryland where she is due in court - and today Philadelphia police will find out if they're bringing her back to town to face charges.

Police say Parler left her quadriplegic son with cerebral palsy out in the woods on April 10 while she took a bus to visit her boyfriend in Maryland.

Authorities say the 21-year-old victim was there for four days in the cold and rain before a man walking through the woods found him covered in a blanket with his wheelchair next to him, along with a bible.

He suffered malnutrition, dehydration, abrasions and was placed in protective custody.

As police were searching for Parler, word came from authorities in Maryland that she was in the hospital there for undisclosed reasons.

When Parler returns to Philadelphia, she will face charges of attempted murder and related offenses.
