Phila. Man Sentenced For 2012 Rape of Developmentally Delayed Niece

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A Philadelphia man was sentenced today to at least 8½ years in prison for raping his 18-year-old, developmentally delayed niece three years ago, at a family gathering.
Assistant district attorney Branwen McNabb said the mother of the victim "beautifully articulated the atrocities of the defendant's crimes" in an impact statement read during the sentencing for Charlie Alog, 62.
" 'The victim will endure pain, fear, and loneliness throughout the rest of her life, and we, as her parents, will have to live with that, until the day we die,' " McNabb quotes from the mother's statement.
Through an interpreter, Alog pleaded guilty last December, admitting he lured his severely developmentally delayed niece away from the crowd to view a family video upstairs, then sexually assaulted her.
"She trusted him because he was her uncle, and he was supposed to protect her," McNabb told KYW Newsradio today.
McNabb asked that Alog be put away for 15 to 30 years after pleading guilty to rape, flight to avoid apprehension, and other crimes. Alog had fled to the Philippines before US marshals caught up with him two years later, and returned him to Philadelphia.
Today, Judge Ann Butchart sentenced Alog to 8½-18 years in prison.
