Philly Woman Using Social Media To Bring Awareness To Safety Issue In The City

By KYW social media editor Melony Roy

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A Philadelphia woman has created a Twitter account to bring awareness to a growing number a safety cones used to alert people to problems -- instead of fixing them.

Victoria Harris created @AwarenessCone three weeks ago after she noticed more and more orange safety cones popping up around the city.

It started with a large hole in a bike lane in Center City. Instead of fixing it, someone just put a safety cone in it.

"I just wanted to make people aware, this is something that maybe if we raise a little awareness we can get a little action from the city," she tells KYW Newsradio.

Harris admits the cones are not the biggest problem the city is facing, but it is a sign of a larger issue:

"It's about whether or not we have the infrastructure to support the residents and businesses we want to see in the city."

Harris has lived in the city for nearly six years and has no plans on leaving:

"It's something that I did because I really do like the city and I'm always hoping that it can improve."

This isn't just a local problem. People are tweeting their cone awareness from North Carolina, Canada, and even Australia.
