Hundreds of Peco Workers Put Energy Back Into Community For National Volunteer Week

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- About 20 Peco employees were inside the Philabundance warehouse in South Philadelphia today, helping to box food to be distributed to low-income seniors in need.
Peco's governmental and external affairs workers were situated along a conveyer belt, preparing those care packages.
"This is just one of 40 events that we're doing throughout the Greater Philadelphia region in support of National Volunteer Week," noted Peco spokeswoman Debra Yemenijian.
In all, she says, the utility has more than 700 workers at various sites this week, putting in a total of 2,500 hours of volunteer service.
James Hamler Jr., of Philabundance, was helping to direct the action as workers packed cereal, canned fruits and vegetables, pasta, and peanut butter into cartons.
"We're doing a project (of) boxes for our seniors that aren't able to get out and get these needed items," he explains. "We get it sent to their homes."
The volunteers were hoping to pack about 600 boxes during their stay.
