Study Finds Newly Hired Teachers Are Smarter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It's well known that teachers are not highly regarded in our society. They're paid poorly and don't rate high on scales of importance. But think about it. Beside families, what adults play a more important role in our lives?
A new study co-authored by Luke C. Miller at the University of Virginia, and joined by researchers from several other universities, found in New York over the period 0f 1986-2010, improvements in combined math and language scores on the SATs for newly certified and newly hired teachers as well as selectivity in the colleges from which they came.
In Spokane, screening showed that the new hires were more likely to stay with the school system, with recommendations allowing the district to cut hiring time by 25%.
