Instagram Account Shines A Spotlight On The Garden State

By social media editor Melony Roy

TINTON FALLS, N.J. (CBS) -- A group of proud New Jersey natives and transplants have created an collabrative project on Instagram, the photo sharing site, devoted to showcasing their state.

Jersey Collective is an Instagram account that showcases the beauty of New Jersey and the many talents of the people who live there.

Monmouth County resident Kerry Sullivan created the account but says it goes beyond the fact that she's from New Jersey.

"I think New Jersey gets kind of a bad reputation sometimes from people," she admits.  "I think people who aren't from here or haven't spent any kind of time in New Jersey have weird perceptions of it."

On Instagram, one photographer takes over the "Jersey Collective" account each week and shoots a certain part of New Jersey using his or her smartphone.

"Anyone can participate in Jersey Collective," Sullivan tells KYW Newsradio.  "We don't limit it to people who are professional photographers.  In fact, most of the people who've participated would not consider themselves professional photographers."

Jersey Collective also hosts "Insta" meets, where people meet up in person at a specific time and place, and walk around and take pictures.
