Local Cardiologist Turns His Own Health Issues Into Textbook To Teach Others

By Lynne Adkins

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A local physician has turned his medical issues into a book to teach others.

When Dr. Nicholas DePace, a cardiologist at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center, was diagnosed with a medical issue causing caused him to faint, he did research and there were papers but no textbooks on the subject.

Now there is. Clinical Autonomic Dysfunction explains how to identify patients at risk for these issues and what treatment is necessary.

"Ah, it's fantastic. I've authored maybe a 100-papers or abstracts but never have an actual medical textbook but to actually have a 460 page that will be out in medical schools to me is probably the greatest achievement of my career."

He says having his own medical issues also makes him more empathetic to his patients.
