Philadelphia Ranked One Of The Most Bike-friendly Cities

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Just as Philadelphia was announcing the launch of its new bike share program in late April, a new study has ranked the city one of the most bike-friendly in the country.

According to BetterDoctor's blog, Philly is the 10th most bike-friendly city, with 2.14% of its commuters peddling to work and overall score of 57.21 out of 100 for bikers.

While those might not seem like such great stats, consider the top city for cyclists, Portland. Even in the number one spot, just 6.14% of the city's population commutes via bike, and the overall city score was 87.59.

BetterDoctor says the list was compiled using three factors: the percentage of commuters who commute by bicycle (weighted at 40% of the total score), the number of fatalities per 10,000 bikers (30% of overall score) and are there ongoing improvements to support bikers (30% of total score).

As expected, cities on the West Coast and cities with great weather tended to come out on top. In fact, the majority of the cities in the top 10 have temperate climates.

So, what cities are the least bike-friendly? Fort Worth, TX was number one, followed by Detroit, MI and Jacksonville, MO.

The study results were released just one week before Mayor Nutter announced the city's bike share program would officially launch on April 23rd.

"Great cities provide residents, commuters, and visitors with great transportation and recreation options," Nutter said.
