'Shofusu Japanese House & Garden' Opens With Cherry Blossom Season Approaching

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A well-known garden in Fairmount Park is now open for visitors.

Folks eager for nicer weather will be happy to hear that Philadelphia's Shofusu Japanese House and Garden in Fairmount Park has officially opened for the season.

"It does usually mean Springtime." Says Derrick Finn, director of operations. "We try to open in April because people are usually excited for the Cherry blossoms."

Finn says although Cherry Blossom Season is right around the corner, it's difficult to predict when the trees will bloom.

"A good rule of thumb is you can always predict based on Washington DC. We're typically a week or two behind them." He says, "Right now, we're expecting April 18th to be peak bloom but you never know."

Finn says even if you're unfamiliar with cherry blossoms, chances are, you've seen them.

"Cherry blossoms, or in Japan we call them "Sakwita," so they're these beautiful pink and sometimes white blossoms and they're all over Fairmount Park."
