Prosecutor's Office: Charges Filed In Assault Of 83-Year-Old Man In Voorhees

By Alexandria Hoff

VOORHEES, N.J. (CBS) -- Prosecutors say a suspect accused of punching an 83-year-old man in the face and then robbing him has been charged.

The robbery happened Thursday in the area of the Robin Hill Apartments on Preston Avenue in Voorhees.

According to the Voorhees Police Department, the two suspects beat the 83-year-old man in the head and face and then robbed him.

Karen Alexander moved into her apartment off of Preston Avenue just one month ago. This was not the welcome she wanted.

"I heard a noise I thought I was coming from upstairs, then my sister said your neighbor is on the ground."

She adds, "He was bloody. He has a cane, but he was really bloody."

Another neighbor says that the friendly elderly man didn't own a car, and despite using a cane, walked everywhere including the nearby Ashland PATCO station.

"I saw the pictures of them and they were huge compared to him."

Police say the two men were captured on surveillance video moments after the crime using the victim's credit card.

Prosecutors say Steven Rashad Miller, 27, of Camden, has been charged with robbery, aggravated assault, unlawful use of a credit card and theft of a credit card. His bail is set at $100,000.

The second man had a much lesser role in the crime, according to the prosecutor's office. They say Raheem Watts, 24, also of Camden, has been charged with unlawful use of a credit card.

The victim suffered injuries to his face and was taken to Kennedy Health in Stratford and later transferred to Cooper.
