Expert To Offer Tips For Best Trees And Shrubs

By Phran Novelli

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - If I had to pick one person to tell you the best trees and shrubs to plant in your yard, it's Doug Tallamy who will be at Delaware Valley College on Saturday April 4.

He's a professor in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware and the award-winning author of Bringing Nature Home: How You Can Sustain Wildlife with Native Plants and co-author with Rick Darke of the recent book, The Living Landscape.

Do you love to wake up to hear birds singing in spring, want butterflies winging in on a summer's day, and long for a lovely landscape that welcomes your family plus all kinds of cute critters to delight children too? You have to plant the right stuff in your yard. It's that simple.

Find out about all the easy-care native trees (like the native Dogwood tree, Cornus florida, pictured here) and shrubs that welcome an amazing array of butterflies, beautiful moths, and other good guys that will lure more birds to your yard than any bird feeder ever could! And learn about plants with fabulous flowers – followed by the fruits and nuts to keep wildlife well-fed while you watch.

Head over to Delaware Valley College's Life Science Building Saturday, April 4th at 10 am, and let Doug Tallamy tell you all about it. The talk is $5, $3 for seniors and students, and free for members and active military.

Here are more details and directions.
