KYW Flashback: One Of Philadelphia's Most Notorious Killers Put Behind Bars

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - On a March night in 1987, KYW Newsradio reported the arrest of a man who would turn out to be the most reviled serial killer in modern Philadelphia history.

The name "Gary Heidnik" soon became synonymous with bizarre and chilling murders, torture, mutilation and indescribable horror.

Reporters unraveled a tale of contradictions about a killer that defense lawyer, Charles Peruto, Jr. insisted was insane, yet sane enough to amass a fortune in stock market investments.

Heidnik kidnapped six women, then raped and tortured them in a chamber of horrors in the basement of his North Marshall street home.

In July 1999, KYW's Harrisburg Bureau reported that Gary Heidnik had died of lethal injection. He was the last man put to death on Pennsylvania's death row.
