Union Fall To FC Dallas 2-0
CHESTER, Pa. (AP) — Tesho Akindele and Ryan Hollingshead scored second-half goals to give early-season pole-sitter FC Dallas a 2-0 win over 10-man Philadelphia on Saturday.
FC Dallas (3-0-0) is the only Major League Soccer team with maximum points after its first three matches.
Akindele, the 2014 MLS Rookie of the Year, forced a defensive turnover in the 49th minute, gathered his deflection, and slid in a breakaway goal for a 1-0 lead. Fabian Castillo hit the crossbar in the 58th minute and Hollingshead rolled in a shot from distance through traffic in the 59th for his first MLS goal.
The game was originally scheduled for Friday, but MLS postponed it due to poor weather conditions.
"We enjoyed a big three points today, but the team understands it's a journey," Dallas coach Oscar Pareja said. "We're focusing on the next one. That's the way we operate here. Now we are going to start our preparation for the next match, which is not just important but against a very good team and at our home, so we keep going. This is the time that we need to keep looking at things one step at a time."
Dallas won its first road game against Philadelphia in four all-time meetings and will return home to face Seattle on Saturday.
Philadelphia played tough for most of the first half but was reduced to 10 men in the 42nd minute after Zach Pfeffer was given a red card for throwing an elbow during a challenge with Mauro Diaz.
Pfeffer almost gave Philadelphia an early lead in the 8th minute. He took a feed from Sebastien Le Toux inside the penalty area and got past a defender, but his shot from a difficult angle rolled just wide.
FC Dallas' goalkeeper Chris Seitz sent away Maurice Edu's long distance shot in the 29th minute. Edu tracked down the rebound and sent in a cross, but Fernando Aristeguieta's header sailed over the goal.
Philadelphia (0-1-2) has just one win in its last 10 regular-season contests and has never beaten FC Dallas in eight all-time matches, going 0-4-4.
