Police: Student Shoots 2 Others Near University Campus In Pa.

EDINBORO, Pa. (AP) — A student at Edinboro University in northwestern Pennsylvania was arrested Saturday after shooting two other students a block from campus, authorities said.

Police in Erie County said the gunfire was reported at 10:20 p.m. Friday at a home in Edinboro. Sgt. Al Donahue told the Erie Times-News that two men aged 19 and 24 were wounded, one in the thigh and the other in the shoulder.

He said a 20-year-old suspect was arrested and faces charges including attempted homicide, possessing an instrument of crime and aggravated assault.

University spokesman Jeffrey Hileman confirmed that all three men are students at Edinboro.

Hileman said the university was placed on lockdown overnight as a safety precaution, and the about 2,000 students who reside on campus were told to remain behind locked doors. Officials went to the student center and some academic buildings open at night to make sure students reached safety, he said.

University president Julie Wollman said in a statement Saturday that the school immediately suspended the suspect.

"Violence has no place here and will not be tolerated," she said.

The shooting was the second this academic year near the university about 20 miles south of Erie.

In November, a 22-year-old former student was shot and killed near the university in a dispute that police said involved drugs and a stolen gun.

"We are deeply concerned that gun violence has disturbed the peace of our community for a second time this academic year," Wollman said. "...These incidents are out of character with our peaceful university and the broader community."
