Girls Still Getting Less Exercise Than Boys
By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The latest information has some good news but also some not so good news. Girls are playing more sports in record numbers, but they still lag behind boys in getting enough exercise.
According to the latest evidence, girls not only participate in sports less than boys, but they're also more likely to quit.
Some of the reasons for this range from stereotyping to a lack of training among coaches.
One of the key issues with girls and sports is recognizing the large role that social issues play. Most girls need a comfortable environment and if they don't feel welcome as a teammate or have a personal issue with a coach or player, they might shy away from participation. Teenage boys tend to be less concerned about these issues or, if they have concerns, they tend to play through them.
There is no doubt this is important because exercise not only helps physically but socially as well.
