A Beer Aficionado's Beer Makes A Quiet Visit to Philadelphia

By Paul Kurtz

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Hardcore beer lovers are lining up to get a sample of a world-class beer that is extremely hard to find.

It's coming to a select number of taverns in Philadelphia, beginning at 5pm today.

John Kimmich will be playing Santa Claus to beer lovers in Philly this evening.  He's the owner of The Alchemist brewery, in Vermont, and is the creator what some experts call the finest beer in the world.

Kimmich packed 25 cases of his unfiltered double IPA, dubbed "Heady Topper," on ice and drove to Philadelphia to drop off five cases at each of five very lucky establishments.

"We will be selling one can per person," says Jocelyn Gibson, assistant GM of City Tap House, in center city.  "There's so much interest that there's just not enough product, and we want as many people as possible to have that experience."

The other lucky taverns are Good Dog, Strangelove's, Brü Craft and Wurst, and Monk's Café.

Heady Topper has developed a cult-like following.  It's the only beer the Alchemist brews, and until now you could only buy it in Vermont.

Gibson says that may be changing.

"We're hoping that this is just the first of many deliveries, so to speak. We're hoping we're going to get more throughout the year," he said.
