'Brewer's Plate' Brings Together Local Restaurants And Breweries

By Justin Udo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Dozens of local breweries and restaurants paired up at the Kimmel Center Sunday afternoon for an event helping a local non-profit.

'Fair Food Philly' promotes local agriculture by putting area farms in contact with restaurants and businesses throughout the region.

Executive Director, Ann Karlen, says their annual 'Brewer's Plate' event pairs brewers and restaurants together and lets attendants sample their food and drink: "We've been doing this for 11 years now and people love this event. The brewers love coming and the food producers love coming, in addition to how receptive the audience is, they love seeing each other every year."

Karlen says their annual brewer's plate event gives hundreds of inquisitive palates a chance to sample food and drink.

"We bring together almost every craft brewer within a 100 mile radius to come here and sample their wonderful products to the people who come to the event, and paired with the brewers are some of our top restaurants and food producers."

Sue Miller with Birchrun Hills Farm is pairing up a few of her cheeses with a hard cider from Frecon Orchards.

"This event is fantastic." Says Miller, "Some of the best brewers, the best distillers partnered up with chocolatiers and cheese makers and restaurants. It's a really fun way to come out and eat and drink and support a really important endeavor."

Bill Covaleski with Victory Brewery says they brought a special wheat sour mash beer to match with food from the restaurant Alla Spina.

"The food culture here in Philadelphia is phenomenal, we know that." Says Covaleski, "The beer culture is a thing that not everybody knows about and it is phenomenal too."

This year marks Brewer's Plate's 11th anniversary.
