Weather: Temperatures Tonight To Plummet Into The Single Digits

By Steven Strouss

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- There is no easy way to travel tonight. Untreated roads are snow covered, sidewalks are slick, and planes are delayed.  The snow has stopped but not before piling up significantly across the region. Most of the Delaware Valley is digging out of 6-8" of snow with higher amounts up to 10" in parts of Delaware and Chester counties. This March storm is over and Philadelphia has received 7.5" of snow, the most amount from any storm this season.

As we say goodbye to one Winter event, another is gearing up. Temperatures tonight will plummet into the single digits under clear skies and records will be broken from the Lehigh Valley to the Shore. We expect a low temperature of 9 degrees in Philadelphia Friday morning which will break the previous record of 10 degrees set back in 1978.

The deep freeze means that morning travel could be tricky. Slushy spots will re-freeze and untreated roads will remain slippery.  Allow plenty of extra time as you head out the door Friday morning and remember to slow down and use caution.

The low pressure system and elongated cold front responsible for the mess earlier today is now moving out to sea but the chill will remain. Highs on Friday will only be in the 20s, a far cry from the average high of 49 degrees.

There is some promising news. Temperatures will rebound into the 50s by next week. Remember to change your clocks this weekend as we Spring forward and in other warming news, summer is only 108 days away!!
