Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Child's First Ski Getaway Alone

BLAKESLEE, Pa. (CBS) - There is a winter day that parents know will arrive, but that many dread, and that is a child's first ski getaway without mom or dad.

Relax. For the kids it's a moment of celebration. They're heading out for a youthful adventure. Don't put a damper on it with excessive warnings and advice.

Whether they're going with a school group, scouts or parents of friends, there are a few things you can do to covertly make your young heirs more comfortable and safe.

Know your child's skiing or snowboard ability and pass the information on to the trip leader or parent. Unless your youngster can ski or ride most of the mountain, put in some cash for a lesson. That should provide a guide for a comfort zone.

Make sure he or she has the right clothing – water resistant pants, ski socks, thermal underway, a good parka, sweater, turtle necks, ski gloves and mittens. They should be set for changing temperatures and to shed layers.

Finally, make sure they have your medical insurance information and your phone number – just in case.
