One Book One Philadelphia One Goal

By Dr. Marciene Mattleman

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - One Book, One Philadelphia is celebrating its 13th year with another novel that brings focus to societal problems. Some previous selections concerned slavery, discrimination and poverty.

Orphan Train paints a vivid picture of orphaned children who were taken off the streets of crowded cities in the 1880's by train to be selected by waiting families - some as workers - all to uncertain futures.

As in other years, many book discussions and programs have been held, bringing the issue to present day with writing workshops, dance and music as well.

And, there is still time to read the book and enjoy the opportunity to meet the author. Come to the finale on March 19th, 7:30 pm at Parkway Central Library, and to smaller venues at the Community College of Philadelphia and the National Liberty Museum to speak with Christina Baker Kline - all free and open to book lovers.
