WEATHER: Month Changes, But Nothing Else

By Carol Erickson

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Big deal, it's March. It might as well be January or February as the weather is stuck firmly in winter mode. Snow moves in during the day, and unseen by us, warmer air moves in on top of that. The frozen layer cake of the atmosphere melts from the top down, and snow changes over to sleet and then freezing rain.

The Winter Storm Warning in Philadelphia and surrounding counties runs until 4 a.m. on Monday. By that point, anywhere from 1 to 3 inches of snow will have fallen in the Philadelphia area, 2 to 3 inches in the Lehigh Valley, and up to 3 to 6 inches in the Poconos.

On top of the cushion of snow comes as much as a quarter to a third of an inch of ice, winter's biggest menace. Temperatures, today, hover around the freezing mark and stay close to that tonight.

Travel gets worse as we move through the day and evening and overnight. By dawn, the skies brighten, but the ground is still in an icy mood, so the morning commute will be slow. Little footsteps out the door too until you figure out where it is icy at your house.

Oh, and bring in and keep in your pets. Cold and wet is a bad combination for them, too.
