Tall Delays For Observation Tower Planned For Camden Waterfront

By Mike DeNardo

CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) - It was touted as a gamechanger for Camden: a 300-foot observation tower slated to open this spring. But the project hasn't gotten off the ground yet.

On Halloween 2013, Camden officials and execs from the Adventure Aquarium announced a $5 million project designed to provide panoramic views of the waterfront. This is what Aquarium executive director Kevin Keppel had to say then:

"In the spring of 2015, we'll be bringing a new attraction to the Camden Waterfront. An observation tower, a scenic observation tower."

But that was then. Groundbreaking for the tower has yet to happen.

Keppel, in a statement provided by a spokeswoman Thursday said "the Skyview Tower remains in the development stage." He said additional planning and engineering work are necessary.

There was no further word on when groundbreaking would take place. The tower, to be built by the British firm Tower Systems, Ltd, was expected to be a prototype for future ventures.
