Woman Who Fatally Stabbed Her Grandfather After Allegedly Catching Him Touching Himself Sentenced

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) — An eastern Pennsylvania woman has been sentenced to 11 to 30 years in the stabbing death of her grandfather almost a year ago.

Twenty-two-year-old Chene Mejias of Allentown apologized in court Wednesday, saying she wasn't "a heartless monster." She previously pleaded guilty to third-degree murder in the March 11 death of 65-year-old Wilson Mejias.

Authorities alleged that Mejias told officers she stabbed her grandfather after catching him touching himself outside of a bathroom that her girlfriend was using.

Defense attorney Richard Webster said the slaying had torn apart the family "in indescribable ways."

Chief Deputy District Attorney Tonya Tharp said the decision to allow Mejias to plead guilty to third-degree murder was a "balance between the savagery of the assault and the mental health considerations of the defendant."
