Local Teacher Honored For Raising More Than $30K For American Heart Association

By Brad Segall

WEST CHESTER, Pa. (CBS) -- A teacher from the West Chester Area School District in Chester County has been singled out for spending the last three decades of his life raising money for the American Heart Association.

At Pierce Middle School, they've been holding Volleyball for Heart since 1985. The driving force behind the event is the man who started it thirty years ago, Physical Education and Health teacher John Kosic.

He was surprised Friday afternoon when the event ended and he was presented with a plaque and special award.

Superintendent Jim Scanlon says, "This is a very giving community and our teachers recognize that, and anytime we get involved with a fundraiser a guy like John takes point, takes the lead. He is a great example to young people and a great example to the community."

Since 2000, Kosic has raised more than $34,000 for the American Heart Association, but Scanlon says it's more than that but they don't have figures prior to that date.

February is American Heart Month.
