Please Touch Museum Again Brings Lunar New Year Festivities To The Younger Set

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Please Touch Museum, in Fairmount Park, today kicked off three days of Lunar New Year activities for youngsters.

Families at the museum today celebrated the start of the "Year of the Goat" on the Chinese calendar with a variety of themed activities.

"We've done the ribbon dancing, and then we went to see the calligraphy for a little bit," said one man.

"The kids love the ribbons and they love learning about other cultures," a woman noted.

"It's really important to me that my kids learn about the bigger world that we live in," another woman said.

Alice Gonglewski, the museum's associate director of family learning, says there's a lot for the kids to learn about.

"This is the Year of the Goat, but it's also sometimes called the Year of the Ram because the root word for 'hooved animal' (in Chinese) is the same," she explains.

And Gonglewski says the Chinese new year is perfect for the toddler set.

"Because each year it's the year of a specific animal.  That's really a fun thing for our age group because children have such an affinity for animals," she notes.
