Residents In Manayunk Navigate Through Snowy Conditions

By Justin Finch

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- By afternoon, sunny and blue skies above Manayunk's Main Street left a few traces of the the morning snowfall.

Just before 6 o'clock Tuesday morning, as the snow bore down, Anthony Fittipaldi, was out shoveling piles of powdery snow outside of The Rowzone at Main and Levering Streets where he works.

"It's not too icy, definitely a little slippery with the snow on the ground."

By sun up, the mid-morning melt down was underway, and workers from Main Street shops and restaurants began readying to open for business.

"It's nice out here," said Rob Hirsch, who works at Kildaire's Irish Pub. "Snow's not gonna keep us from working here, and drinking," Hirsch said as he shoveled the ankle-high snow, while a coworker salted behind him.

The snow shoveling after the brunt of the storm passed was an easier task than the one plow trucks were dealt with earlier that morning.

Plows made regular trips along Main Street and its hilly side offshoots to keep up with the steadily-falling snow.

Clearing Manayunk's noteworthy hills takes special skill. Smaller plow trucks carefully maneuver up and down the hills, and once they finish, it's up to drivers to stay alert as they navigate them hours later, when the snow leaves behind slick patches.

Just before noon, many of Manayunk's snowy spots were looking clearer, except for a few areas that Eva Johnson noticed.

"If the [store and restaurant] owners could actually get out here earlier when it snows, and just clear the sidewalks, that would be great; but most of them don't open until 10 or 11 o'clock."

By the time she gets home, Johnson said she expects the sidewalks to be snow free, and though the morning snowfall uwas inconvenient, she knows it could be worse.

"At least we're not like they are up in Boston," she added.
