Police Athletic League Takes Over Palestra for a Play Day For Area Schoolkids

By Kim Glovas

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Today may have been a day off from school for many kids in Philadelphia, because of the cold, but 200 lucky ones got to go to "PAL Day," at the Palestra.

Philadelphia's cathedral of college basketball played host to girls and boys involved in the Police Athletic League's annual President's Day play day.

Nyceem Corbitt, 13, of North Philadelphia, was one of them.

"I love it because it's fun," he told KYW Newsradio.  "I like basketball, and we get to play where colleges played."

The banners hanging from the ceiling of the Palestra were not lost on the 5'-9" eighth grader either.

"When I first came here, I was looking around and I actually saw the sign 'The Big 5,' and it was saying Temple and the names of all the colleges that have been here."

Nyceem is a guard and hopes to play basketball or football when he goes to college.  He also had high praise for the Police Athletic League and the day's program.

"I give them an A-plus because it really was fun," he said.
