Widener President Leaving To Take Post In San Diego

CHESTER, Pa. (AP) — Widener University president James Harris III is resigning at the end of July to become president of the University of San Diego.

Harris, who became the ninth president of the Chester university in 2002, said the decision wasn't an easy one and he had been honored to work with the university's faculty and staff.

The school said Harris tripled the university's endowment to $90 million and launched the largest fundraising campaign in its history, raising another $62 million to date.

Officials said that had allowed the university to invest more than $222 million in capital improvements on its four campuses and more than doubled financial aid to students.

The board of trustees plans to launch a nationwide search for a new president.
